In my research I focus on the topic of innate immunity from the comparative and developmental point of view. The model organism used in these studies is an oligochaete earthworm Eisenia andrei. The understanding of defense mechanisms of this simple organism on both cellular and molecular levels helps us to better understand more sophisticated immunity in vertebrates. Moreover, earthworms are permanently in close contact with soil particles and are thus well suited for the monitoring of soil contamination. Therefore, I also focus on the effects of contaminants on the natural defense barriers and immune system of earthworms. These immunological parameters can be used as reliable biomarkers for the detection of the pollutant-induced responses of soil organisms. | ||
